About the event
The Burns Night Supper is a national institution in Scotland and is celebrated around the world to
acknowledge the birth, the life, and the works of the Scottish Bard. From his humble beginnings as the
son of a farmer, he became the National Poet of Scotland. Most people are familiar with at least one of
his works, although they may not know who wrote it. On New Year’s Eve many sing “Auld Lang Syne”
arguably Burns most famous work.
Burns was born in Alloway, Ayrshire, Scotland on Jan. 25, 1759 and died at the young age of 37 in July
1796. The Burns Supper has been a tradition since January 1801, just 5 short years after his death, when
his friends and colleagues decided to hold a memorial dinner and they gathered to mourn his passing
and celebrate his many poems and songs that primarily focused on Scotland and the Scots way of life.
Burns Night is filled with poetry, food, music, and of course scotch whiskey. (Wine and beer are also
thrown into the mix)
There are short speeches, humorous toasts, bag pipes, haggis and of course Burns poetry readings.
The evening begins with drinks and Scottish music followed by the piping in of the guests and a welcome
by the host. It is followed by “The Selkirk Grace” and then the focus turns to food featuring, of course,
the haggis, that favored Scottish dish, complete with all the pomp and theatrics from the piping in with
the bagpipes to the address using Burns famous poem “To A Haggis.” There is a four-course meal
followed by entertainments, poetry, speeches and toasts.
Just like everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day – everyone is Scottish on Robert Burns Day.
